Make the Quran your best friend
Allah Almighty mentioned the importance of His revelation repeatedly – the final revelation and the perfect message which He sent to humanity. The Sunnah is the manifestation and explanation of the Quran – the practice and application of the Quran.
Does your attachment to the Quran match your attachment to your phone?
Many of us are deeply attached to our phones. We can’t live without them. If we leave them behind, we rush back to collect them because they are our life. Our banking and our business, our families and friends, our calendars and dairies are all connected and organised on our phones and even our steps are measured by them.
What if we were to make our companion the Quran instead of our phones?
The Quran has been made easy to grasp
Allah Almighty said in a beautiful ayah in Surat al Qamar:
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ
We made the Quran easy to remember. Is there anyone who would learn? (54:17)
This means the Quran is easy to read, recite, memorise and understand. It is a promise from Allah Almighty that the Quran has been made easy to grasp. The proof is that 5 and 6 year olds can recite its verses without understanding a single word. You don’t find this with any book on earth except the Quran. How many people have memorised Shakespeare or the Bible or Torah? I can assure you that no set of people have memorised any book more than Muslims have memorised the Quran. This is one of the miracles of the Quran.
Struggling to recite? Keep persevering
No one can make it easy except Allah. Even if you are spelling out the letters and having difficulties, keep going. Why do people keep going even if they find it difficult? Because it has sweetness. And with practice Allah Almighty makes it easy. Even when you find it hard to reading, the Quran fills your heart with the light of Allah and the sweetness of His words when you understand them. Even when you don’t understand them, you experience the light coming into your heart and you feel tranquility.
Those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. (13:28)
When Aisha was asked about the character of the Prophet (peace be on him), she said his character was the Quran:
Verily, the character of the Prophet of Allah was the Quran. (Muslim)
He recited it, memorised it, lived it, applied it and spread it.
Allah Almighty is inviting us to learn and memorise and recite the Quran and most importantly live and disseminate the Quran. Let’s make the Quran our companion.
As Allah stated it is easy, so even if you don’t understand it, start. Develop your love for and relationship with the Quran.
The language of the soul
Regardless which language you speak the Quran is the language of the soul. All souls understand the Quran. You need to learn it to nourish your soul. You have been given the innate ability to recognise it’s truth. If you activate it, it will change your life.
Be from the People of Allah
Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
‘Allah has His own people among mankind.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, who are they?’ He said: ‘The People of the Qur’an, the People of Allah and those who are closest to Him.’ (Imam Ahmed and Ibn Majah)
Just as we refer to the House of Allah (Bait ullahi) we say People of Allah (ahlullahi) . The People of the Quran are the people who are closest to Allah Almighty. If you want to be from among those who are the closest to Allah, connect to the Quran.
In order to be from the People of Allah, you have to have a pure heart and you have to act on the Quran and have good character – be merciful, gentle, generous and kind. Refrain from whatever is haram and fulfil your obligations. It is not enough to recite the Quran, to be among the People of Allah Almighty. When you start, then you have to continue.
Imam Ahmed, in his book, Az-Zuhd, mentioned that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
I hate to pass my day or night without looking at the book of Allah.
On a daily basis, he was connected to the Quran – and dedicated time to read and recite a portion, as was the practice of the companions and will be the practice of those close to Allah until the Day of Judgment. It is not the feature of a believer to go one day without reciting the Quran. Unless they are ill or they cannot read their daily wird for some reason, they keep their connection.
The reward of connecting with the Quran
The reward is immense. For those who are into calculations, those who recite regularly, will have accounts that are full. You receive 10 good deeds for every letter you recite. The starting point is times ten. I had a student 25 years ago who had a calculator and kept calculating how many letters she had read that day. I don’t suggest you do this. However, ask Allah Almighty to enable you to be among the People of the Quran and people He is pleased with. It is a great honour.
Those who neglect the Quran
Although it doesn’t reflect the status of the ummah today, the Prophet (peace be on him) was sad at the Quraysh who did not want to listen to the Quran.
وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا
And the Messenger will say, ‘My Lord, my people have abandoned this Quran’.(25:30)
This is like some people in our ummah today. They have abandoned the Quran. They respect it but for them it is merely an adornment for their walls, and they keep the Quran on their bookshelf. To truly honour the Quran, you apply it in your life.
Be the Chosen Ones
Allah Almighty selected the people He sent His book to:
ثُمَّ أَوْرَثْنَا الْكِتَابَ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ۖ
Then We passed the Book to those of Our servants whom We chose. (35:32)
If you want to be the chosen ones, revere Allah’s book.
Re-ignite your connection with the Quran and make it your companion.
Let’s teach it to our children and memorise it, and Allah Almighty will make us among those whom He has chosen and fill our hearts, homes and community with light and sweetness.
